yin + iRest yoga nidra

  • terra sol sanctuary 507 Castle Street Wilmington, NC, 28401 United States (map)

with rebecca gellman

This pop up class is a balance for our busy, always moving, active lifestyles by focusing on yoga poses and meditation that are more about being still, pausing, noticing, resting and relaxing. This class will consist of moving through a yin yoga sequence that targets our connective tissue and joints and then settling into final resting form for a restful guided iREST meditation. This class is open to all participants, no prior yin or meditation experience necessary.

What is Yin Yoga?

Yin Yoga has the same goals and objectives as any other school of yoga; however, it directs the stimulation normally created in the asana portion of the practice deeper than the superficial or muscular tissues (which we are calling the yang tissues). Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.

While initially this style of yoga can seem quite boring, passive, or soft, yin practice can be quite challenging due to the long duration of the poses. We can remain in the postures an average of 3-7 minutes while relying on gravity for the poses (all yin poses are done on the mat, no standing poses).

iRest Meditation

iRest is a natural process of mindfulness meditation based on ancient yogic wisdom and modern-day science that has been shown to effectively help with sickness, injury, pain in your body and mind, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and insomnia/sleep disorders. this class will consist of an iRest guided meditation along with some brief information and education provided about iRest.

All are welcome! No prior experience necessary. This practice helps both the physical and emotional aspects of our well-being. iRest teaches self-care tools that lead you to find and experience the self-mastery, resilience, and well-being that you already possess within yourself. Come and join us as you give yourself this restorative practice!
